Learning Humility Through the Cross

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." James 4:10
In our journey of faith, being humble is really important. Jesus showed us how to be humble, especially through His sacrifice on the cross. Today, let's think about what we can learn about humility from Jesus' time on the cross.
Reflections:
1.    The Cross as the Leveler: The cross shows us that everyone is equal in God's eyes. How does thinking about what Jesus went through help us stay humble every day? Ellen White says, “By looking unto Jesus, who is the Author and Finisher of our faith, all the desire for self-glorification is laid in the dust. There comes, as we see aright, a spirit of self-abasement that promotes lowliness and humbleness of mind. As we contemplate the cross, we are enabled to see the wonderful provision it has brought to every believer. God in Christ ... if seen aright, will level human exaltation and pride. There will be no self-exaltation, but there will be true humility.” Letter 20, 1897

2.    Gifts for God's Glory: How can we see our talents and abilities as gifts from God, meant to help others and bring glory to Him, instead of just showing off? Ellen White says,  “Those who seek God with all the heart, …..They will cease to ascribe glory to themselves. They will not pride themselves on their acquirements, or take credit to themselves for their capabilities, but will regard all their talents as God's gifts, to be used to His glory. Every intellectual ability they will regard as precious only as it can be used in the service of Christ.” The Youth's Instructor, December 6, 1900.
3.    Clothed in Humanity: Jesus chose to be like us, even though He's God. How does His choice to be humble inspire us to be humble with other people?

4.    Denying Self: How can we be more like Jesus by putting others before ourselves and following His example of sacrifice? How does this show us what true greatness really means? Ellen White says, “Christ's humiliation in clothing His divinity with humanity is worthy of our consideration. Had this subject been studied as carefully as it should have been, there would be far less of “I” heard and far more of Christ. ….When we follow Jesus in the path of self-denial and the cross, we shall find that we do not have to strive for humility. As we walk in Christ's footsteps, we shall learn His meekness and lowliness of heart. Very few thoughts should be devoted to self; for we can never make ourselves great. It is Christ's gentleness that makes us great.” Letter 100, 1895.

5.    Christ as All in All: What happens when we focus more on Jesus than on ourselves? How does this change our lives? Ellen White says, “God's faithful, humble, believing people will cut the idolatry of self out of their hearts, and Christ will become all and in all.” Manuscript 29, 1900.

Reflection Questions:
1.    When is it hardest for you to remember to be humble in your everyday life?
2.    How can you be more humble and gentle in the way you treat others?
3.    Can you think of a time recently when you felt like Jesus was showing humility in your life? How did it make you feel?
4.    What can you do this week to think more about Jesus and less about yourself?

Remember, true greatness comes from being humble, and when we look at the cross, we can learn how to walk in the same humble footsteps as our Savior, Jesus.

 Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for showing us what true humility looks like through Jesus. Help us to be humble like Him in everything we do. Guide us to put others first and to always remember to lift You up. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Dear God in heaven I come to you now. I know that Jesus is very humble to take away my sins. I realized that I'm a sinner. But this time I come to you please forgive me and accept me. May the cloth of humbleness of Jesus Christ be upon me to put others first in my life and praise God. God that is my desire to honor you Lord.
    Amen..
