Trusting in God's Words, Not Our Feelings

The just shall live by his faith. Habakkuk 2:4.

God says in the Bible that those who are righteous will live by faith or by trusting Him. Many people feel unsure and confused because they don't feel the way they want to. But how we feel doesn't have anything to do with trusting God. Trusting in God means believing in His promises, even when we don't feel like it. Ellen White says, “Many pass long years in darkness and doubt because they do not feel as they desire. But feeling has nothing to do with faith. That faith which works by love and purifies the soul is not a matter of impulse. It ventures out upon the promises of God, firmly believing that what He has said, He is able also to perform. Our souls may be trained to believe, taught to rely upon the Word of God. That Word declares that “the just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17), not by feeling.” The Youth's Instructor, July 8, 1897.

We can learn to believe in God and trust His words. The Bible tells us that we should trust God, not how we feel. We shouldn't doubt Jesus and His promises. He wants us to trust Him without any doubts.

Some people say they believe in Jesus and claim all His promises, but they don't act like Jesus. They don't live the way Jesus taught. This kind of belief doesn't honor God. Others try to follow God's commandments, but they don't take advantage of the promises God made for them. God's promises are for those who follow His commandments and do what pleases Him.

Through the Holy Spirit, not by ourselves alone, we fight every day to trust God and believe in Him, even when I don't feel like it. I can't rely on my feelings. I have to act as I believe God hears me and will help me. Trusting God isn't just about feeling good. It's about believing He will keep His promises because He said He would.

Whether we feel happy or not, we should still hope in God, trust Him, and rely on His promises. Feeling good doesn't prove we belong to God, and feeling bad doesn't prove we don't. We should read the Bible and trust God's promises. If we follow God's commandments and believe in Him, He will accept us as His children. We should trust God and not doubt Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do I find myself relying more on my feelings or on God's promises in challenging situations?
  2. How can I cultivate a deeper trust in God's words, regardless of how I feel?
  3. What steps can I take to align my actions with my belief in God's promises?
  4. Have I experienced times when my feelings led me away from trusting God? How did I overcome this?
  5. In what areas of my life do I need to trust God more and rely less on my own feelings?
  6. How can I distinguish between fleeting emotions and enduring faith in God's promises?
  7. What practical steps can I take to strengthen my faith and trust in God's Word, even when my feelings fluctuate?
  8. Am I actively seeking to live out the principles of faith and trust in my daily life, or do I often rely on my feelings as a guide?
