Understanding Faith

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

Faith is trusting in something you can't see but hope for. It's not something we just come up with ourselves, but rather it's something God works in us. The Holy Spirit helps us understand who Jesus is, just as Jesus showed us who the Father is. Faith is like the solid ground of our hopes and the proof of things we can't see. It's more powerful than what people call science because it deals with eternal truths. Human knowledge can sometimes be wrong, but this heavenly understanding never fails. It's so straightforward that even a child can grasp it, yet even the smartest people can't fully explain it. It's beyond words and measurement.

Ellen White shares about faith in this way; “Faith in Christ is not the work of nature, but the work of God on human minds, wrought in the very soul by the Holy Spirit, who reveals Christ, as Christ revealed the Father. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. With its justifying, sanctifying power, it is above what men call science.” Manuscript 44, 1904.

Believing in Jesus' sacrifice is the foundation of true faith. When we honestly look at ourselves and recognize our sins, seeing how different we are from Jesus, we gain the strength to overcome. Genuine faith leads us to admit our wrongs and turn away from them. We cooperate with Jesus to bring our sinful tendencies under control, so they don't rule over us. By looking to Jesus, who starts and completes our faith journey, we become more like Him. We mature into fully developed individuals in Christ. Those who truly believe, confess, and change their ways become more and more like Jesus until they are fully complete in Him.

"Ask, and it will be given to you" is a promise from Jesus. Our part is to trust in His words without doubting, believing that God will keep His promise. Even when doubts creep in, we can turn to Jesus and find encouragement through our connection with Him. The redemption He offers us is thorough and generous. Heaven always has an abundant supply of help for those who are in need.

Reflection questions

  1. How does the concept of faith being "the substance of things hoped for" resonate with your own experiences and beliefs?
  2. Reflecting on the idea that true faith involves recognizing our sins and striving to overcome them, what are some practical steps you can take in your own life to align more closely with the teachings of Jesus?
  3. In what ways can you apply the promise of "Ask, and it shall be given you" to your own life, especially during times of doubt or difficulty?
