The Power of Humble Prayer

My dear brothers and sisters, my apologies for not delivering you a morning devotional message since I am traveling to Malaysia for an ethnographic education trip. Anyway, I will try my best to share something when I can by God’s grace. So, I just finished writing tonight and deliver it to you tonight as well. Hoping you can read it tomorrow. Today, I will talk about Elijah. I chose the title: The Power of Humble Prayer

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.James 5:17-18

In the Bible, we learn about Elijah. He was just like us, facing the same struggles and challenges. But what set him apart was his earnest and persevering prayer. Once, Elijah prayed so fervently that it didn't rain for three and a half years. Then, when he prayed again, rain poured down, and the land became fruitful again (James 5:17, 18). Ellen White described it this way,

“The servant watched while Elijah prayed. Six times he returned from the watch, saying, There is nothing, no cloud, no sign of rain. But the prophet did not give up in discouragement. He kept reviewing his life, to see where he had failed to honor God.... As he searched his heart, he seemed to be less and less, both in his own estimation and in the sight of God. It seemed to him that he was nothing, and that God was everything; and when he reached the point of renouncing self, while he clung to the Saviour as his only strength and righteousness, the answer came. The servant appeared, and said, “Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand.” 1 Kings 18:44.” SDA Bible Commentary 2:1035.

Elijah's story teaches us important lessons about prayer. When he prayed for rain on Mount Carmel, he faced doubt and discouragement. But he didn't give up. Instead, he kept praying, examining his life, and humbling himself before God. He realized his own weakness and the greatness of God's power. And when he surrendered himself completely to God, the answer came—a small cloud appeared, signaling the coming rain.

This shows us that God listens to our prayers. When we trust His promises and persist in prayer, He will answer us. God wants us to align our desires with His will, so He can bless us abundantly. And when He does bless us, we should give all the glory to Him, recognizing His goodness and faithfulness.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does Elijah's example encourage you to pray more earnestly?
  2. Have you ever experienced a time when God answered your prayers after a period of waiting? How did it strengthen your faith?
  3. What areas of your life do you need to surrender to God in prayer, trusting His timing and wisdom?
  4. In what ways can you give glory to God for answered prayers in your life, rather than taking credit for yourself?
  5. How can you cultivate a deeper dependence on God through humble and persevering prayer?

Let's reflect on these questions and strive to deepen our prayer life, knowing that God hears and answers us according to His perfect plan.

    Maranatha,

Thank you for the little note before the message much appreciated.

What stood out for me today is that Elijah prayed and examined himself, not only did he examine himself he also humbled himself before God. I always say God answers prayers even though he doesn't give you exactly what you asked for. He will show you something about your character that needs correction with relation to what you are asking.

    God bless.
